To the Newcomer

Whatever led you here, however you found out about OA we welcome you with open arms. Whatever your circumstances, we offer you the gift of acceptance. You are not alone anymore. Welcome to Overeaters Anonymous. Welcome home!

What you will find at OA meetings is:

  • Acceptance of you as you are now, as you were, as you will be.
  • Understanding of the problems you now face — problems almost certainly shared by others in the group.
  • Communication that comes as the natural result of our mutual understanding.
  • Recovery from your illness.
  • Power to enter a new way of life through the practice of the Twelve-Step recovery program, the belief in a power greater than yourself, and the support and companionship of the group.

What you won’t find at OA meetings are:

  • Weigh-ins
  • Packaged meals
  • Dues
  • Fees
  • “Shoulds”
  • “Musts”
  • Judgment

There is a lot of information available to recovering overeaters, we don’t want to overwhelm you with too much information but hope the following will be useful to you on your journey.

Our way of life, based on these twelve steps and twelve traditions, has brought us physical, emotional and spiritual healing, that we don’t hesitate to call miraculous. What works for us will work for you, too. In working Overeaters Anonymous’ Twelve-Step program of recovery from compulsive overeating, we have found that a number of tools are available to assist us. We use these tools of recovery (A Plan of Eating, Sponsorship, Meetings, Telephone, Writing, Literature, Action Plan, Anonymity and Service) on a regular basis, to help us achieve and maintain abstinence and recover from our disease.

Sponsors are OA members who are living the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions to the best of their ability and who are willing to share their recovery with other members up to the level of their own experience. Ours is a program of attraction; find a sponsor who has what you want and ask that person how he or she is achieving it. When you are ready you can find more information about sponsors here.
